Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro taking Rongai route
Day 1: Moshi- Nale Moru- Simba Camp (2600m)
After breakfast you will drive to Nale Moru village (1950m/ 6398ft) which is the base camp and starting point for treks. Begin trekking through the pine forest where you will spot various wildlife. You will find the first camp at the edge of the moorland. Today’s hiking takes 5 hours. Dinner and overnight at Simba camp
Day 2: Simba camp- Kikelewa Camp (3600m)
After breakfast you will ascend to the Second Cave (3450m/11,319ft) with superb views of Kibo. You will continue across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second major peak which is 17,000 feet. Today’s camp, the second on the journey up the mountain, lies just before the saddle that connects Mawenzi to Kibo and Uhuru peaks. This will take 6-7 hours. Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa camp
Day 3: Mawenzi Tarn (4330m)
Today you will hike to Mawenzi Hut. Dinner and overnight at the hut as you prepare for the next day’s long hike.
Day 4: (Summit Attempt) Kibo hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo hut (3720m)
On this day hiking will take 8h to Uhuru, 6h to get to Horombo this is approximately 6kms ascent, 21kms descent. Today you will rise up very early, have some tea and then begin hiking to the summit. The path goes up to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. From Gillmans Point you will encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After this you will take 3 hors to descend to Kibo hut and others 3 hours down to Horombo hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Horombo hut (3720m) – Marangu Gate (1980m)
Descending will take 6 hours which is approximately 27 hours
After breakfast you will descend passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. Proceed to Moshi for dinner and overnight stay.
